Day 2: Lessons from Jochebed: Beautiful Boy

Do you remember the moment your newborn child entered the world?  I will never forget my first night with my firstborn, Gabriel.  The nurses brought him into my room after his bath and routine assessments.  They placed him in my arms and we rested in the hospital bed, just the two of us, with him cradled in my arms for hours.  I kept thinking the nurses would come and take him back to the nursery, but they never did.  He was all mine, my beautiful boy.

Jochebed immediately fell in love with her sweet baby boy.  I imagine the older siblings crowded around him, excited to meet their new baby brother.  Perhaps, like most dads, Amram proudly looked down at his son as he held him in his arms for the first time.  His eyes would glance over at his wife, with reignited appreciation for all she had just endured during the miracle of childbirth.

The Bible says when Jochebed looked down at her child and saw that he was a “fine” child, she hid him for three months.  Other translations replace the word “fine” with “goodly”, “special baby”, “especially beautiful and healthy”, and “fair unto God”.  Jochebed knew this baby was special.  But choosing to disobey Pharaoh’s order and hide him put herself and her family at great risk.  If found out, not only would her baby be thrown into the Nile, but she, Amram, Miriam, and Aaron would all be put to death.

Choosing to hide the infant at the detriment of their family may have seemed like a foolish choice, but Amram and Jochebed were grounded in faith.  It was not fear that compelled them to hide him. Fast forward to the New Testament.  Tucked away in Hebrews within the chapter often referred to as “The Heroes of Faith” is the mention of Moses’ parents.

By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.  Hebrews 11:23

  1. When faced with circumstances surrounding your child that are out of your control, are you praying instead of panicking?

The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.  Exodus 2:2

By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.  Hebrews 11:23

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.  Psalm 46:1-3

“For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”  Isaiah 41:13
