Day 5: Lessons from Jochebed: Testing the Waters

Yesterday we discussed how God used Jochebed’s simple skill of basket making, along with her obedience, to save her son.  Now we are going to dive a little deeper and “test the waters”, so to speak.

I’m going to go out on a limb here, but I’m gonna say preparing a basket that would serve a life saving purpose was a first for Jochebed.  Sure, she had probably woven many a baskets in her day, most likely since childhood.  But this basket was different.  This basket would hold her most precious cargo.

I can picture her sneaking down to the river side and testing her finished handiwork.  Had she woven the braids of papyrus tight enough?  Had she coated the outside with enough pitch to seal it from leaks?  Would it float upright in the water or would it be prone to tipping over?  I can also imagine the sides of her mouth curving up ever so slightly, a she witnessed her workmanship pass the test with flying colors.

Since the moment our child enters the world, everything we do begins to prepare them to leave home, starting with cutting the umbilical cord.  We teach them how to eat with a spoon.  We encourage them to crawl, then walk, and finally run.  We slowly allow them more freedom; freedom to think for themselves, make decisions, and make mistakes.  When they get behind the steering wheel for the first time alone, we are “testing the waters”.  When they finally leave the nest, away from our watchful eyes and loving arms, we pray our years of “mother-crafting” has paid off.  We can trust that the late night prayers, Bible stories, hard lessons, and years of investing , will be safely guarded by our loving father.  We can trust that God is watching over our most precious cargo and the basket is not going to leak.

  1. Do you trust God with your child?
  2. Do you believe he is capable of keeping your child safe even when he/she is no longer within arms reach of your loving protection?

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.  Psalm 91:11

He will cover you with his feathers.  He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.  Psalm 91:4
