Day 9: Lessons from Jochebed: According to Your Faith

“His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.”  Exodus 2:4

It’s easy to skip over this short little verse, this small detail quickly mentioned within the heroic account of a mother defying a king’s law to save the life of her child.

Miriam was 10 years old when Baby Moses was born.  She already had years of experience at being the doting big sister to her little brother Aaron.  During Biblical times, Miriam would have been “Mommy’s Little Helper” as she learned the skills, expectations, and knowledge surrounding her future role as a Hebrew wife. Undoubtedly, she would have also known about Pharaoh’s decree and how her parents had defied the law and hid Moses for 3 months.

So the question begging my mind is this…Did Jochebed invite Miriam along with her to the banks of the river to watch over Moses?  Or did Miriam take it upon herself to be her brother’s keeper? While the Bible doesn’t specify the details, we do know this…God used 10 year old Miriam in a big way! As Moses was drawn out of the water and tenderly gazed upon, she witnessed firsthand the faithfulness of God.

Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”  “Yes, go,” she answered.  So the girl went and got the baby’s mother. Exodus 2:7-8

Jochebed’s obedience and faithfulness not only saved Moses, but also rippled into the lives of her other children.  Miriam’s faith was cemented as she watched God intervene and save the life of her baby brother.

Mommas, your children are watching what you do.  They are watching the way you live out your faith.  Your faith is impacting their lives whether you can see the results right now or not.  Just as God specifically chose Jochebed to be Moses’ mother…just as God chose Miriam as his sister… God picked you out specifically to be the mother of your child.

  1.  As your child navigates this new season in life,  how can you continue to be an example of unwavering faith in their life?
  2. Pray God will protect your child physically, spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and in every way.

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.  Mark 11:24

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.  Proverbs 22:6
