Over the past 10 days of our study, Jochebed has been through A LOT, but we have also witnessed God’s hand of protection upon her and her family. The fruit of Jochebed’s faithfulness during her trials was a welcomed season of peace.
How great the rejoicing must have been in Amram and Jochebed’s house that night when she walked through the door holding Moses! How peacefully they must have slept with all three of their children safely nestled beside them. They no longer had to live in fear! They had been promised a few short years of raising their son; more than they had ever dared to dream for.
It remains unclear how long Moses lived with his parents. Typically children were weaned between the ages of 2-5 years old. As agreed upon, when Moses transitioned to solid foods and no longer required his mother’s milk, she returned him to the palace. To say goodbye to your child, not once, but twice, would be heart-rending. So how did she do it?
Jochebed’s source of hope was in the Lord. He had proven his faithfulness. He had demonstrated his goodness. She had experienced his hand of protection and knew He would not forsake her son now. Her strength was in him.
Mothers, it is so easy to lose sight of your true identity as a Daughter of the King when you are busy raising kids. We have to remember though, our children are “on loan” from God. One day they will step onto the path he has laid before them. He will expect them to “leave and cleave” as he blesses them with a family of their own. Just as you have spent their entire childhood preparing them to leave home one day, you also need to prepare yourself for when they leave. It is natural to miss your child when they go, but don’t let Satan rob you of your joy. Lean into Christ. Strengthen your prayer life. Trust that He not only has a good plan for your child, but for you as well!
When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.” Exodus 2:10
Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Ephesians 5:31
Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. Psalm 25: 4-5
